T-SHIRT: Thirty-six poems – Sōtatsu & Kōetsu
In 17th-century Japan, the encounter between painting and poetry gave rise to works that were both visual and literary. Tawaraya Sōtatsu, master of the Rinpa school, depicted cranes in flight with swift, fluid brushstrokes, while calligrapher and potter Hon’ami Kōetsu added the verses of thirty-six waka poets. The result is a 13-meter scroll, now preserved at the Kyoto National Museum.
Rinpa art
The cranes, drawn by Sōtatsu with quick and simplified strokes, form a collective movement reminiscent of waves. Kōetsu’s calligraphy, accompanying the scene with the verses of thirty-six waka poets, is not mere text but an essential part of the composition. The work reflects the collaborative nature of Rinpa art, where painting and writing merge into a single visual language.
