T-SHIRT: KURT COBAIN - Vancouver 1990
The shot featured on this t-shirt was taken by Charles Peterson, a key photographer of Seattle’s grunge scene. It captures Kurt Cobain during a performance at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver in 1990, in the middle of the promotional tour for their debut album Bleach. In this photo—part of the permanent exhibition Shoulders of Giants at the EMP Museum—Kurt is in one of his classic, raw, physical performances: on the ground, guitar still in hand, legs lifted. A gesture that perfectly embodies Nirvana’s rough energy in their early years.
Nirvana before Nevermind
In 1990, Nirvana were still a cult band, teetering between the underground and future global success. Cobain, 23 years old, led the trio with brutal, uncompromising artistic urgency. Alongside him were Dave Grohl on drums (who had joined the band that very year) and Krist Novoselic on bass. After Bleach (1989), the band was already working on Nevermind, which would be released in 1991 and forever change the musical landscape. The photo documents the final phase before that ultimate breakthrough.
Wearing this t-shirt means evoking the essence of grunge before it became fashion. It is a tribute to an unrepeatable era and to a musician who gave voice to a generation without needing to explain it.
