T-SHIRT: Ukiyo-e Specter – a tribute to Utagawa Kuniyoshi
A palace breached by skeletal fingers, a spell cast from a scroll, two warriors menaced by a colossal ghost emerging from the shadows—this is a scene where history, myth, and vision collide.
The artwork comes from a famous triptych by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, master of ukiyo-e, depicting the moment when Princess Takiyasha conjures a gashadokuro—a giant skeleton spirit—to terrify the official Mitsukuni. It’s a dense, theatrical image that still hits with visual force.
Ghosts, rebellion, and technical mastery
Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861) was one of the first Japanese artists to blend folklore and military history into bold, narrative compositions.
This triptych—among his most iconic—merges the meticulous detail of woodblock printing with the gothic imagination of Japanese legend. Sharp lines, stark contrasts, and the oversized specter all turn this print into a dramatic tableau, suspended between folklore and kabuki-style stagecraft.
